Furoshiki (風呂敷)

 

 

We've just revealed an exciting new range of furoshiki (風呂敷) at our online shop and while we’ve talked about the humble tenugui (手ぬぐい) in the past, if you’re looking to elevate your sustainability efforts, look no further.  Furoshiki are reusable, square Japanese fabrics used to wrap gifts, transport goods and accessorise or decorate.  They’re generally more varied in pattern, fabric and texture than tenugui, making them an aesthetically-pleasing, luxury and eco-friendly alternative, and

As one of Japan’s most iconic and enduring accessories, the history of furoshiki can be traced back over 1,200 years to the Nara period (710-794), when they were first used to protect precious items found in temples.  Since then, it’s become an everyday essential, most commonly used to carry food and as an environmentally-friendly way to present gifts. 

There’s also an art to furoshiki-wrapping, with multiple, fun ways in which to wrap goods, whether they’re long, round or flat.  This makes them perfect for special occasions.
