The iconic bronze statue of Hachikō at Shibuya station in Tokyo
As we approach International Dog Day on 26 August, the true-life story of the Akita dog Hachikō's incredible loyalty to his owner is a particularly heartwarming tale. Along with the Akita Inu, with inu (犬) meaning dog, there are six ancient breeds native to Japan; Hokkaidō, Kai Ken, Kishu, Shikoku, Shiba Inu.
The most well-known Japanese breeds, like the Akita and Shiba Inu, fall under the spitz type of dog. Characteristics include large, bear-like faces, thick fur, pointed ears and small, dark, deepset eyes. The cutest part? Their curled tails.
