Famed for its four distinct seasons, Japan enjoys seasonal aromas as well as changing landscapes. The classic scenes of Japanese nature that many are familiar with often have their own distinct kaori (“scent”), from iconic sakura (“cherry blossom”) and yuzu fruit to take (“bamboo”) and sugi (“cedar”).
These aromas are often used to fragrance onsen (“hot springs”) and captured in various forms of perfume, making them relaxing, nostalgic scents for many Japanese people. There are other sentimental aromas too, such as incense and tatami mats in the home.
